Playa Limon virgin beach

Playa Limon is a 4 kilometer virgin beach on the Atlantic coast of the Dominican Republic, 25 minutes east of Miches town. Unlike Playa Esmeralda or Playa Bavaro it has no resorts, no buildings and no permanent businesses. It is widely considered one of the most untouched beaches still left in the country.

This page explains where Playa Limon is, what to expect, how to get there and how it differs from Round Mountain and Playa Esmeralda as a half-day option.

Where is Playa Limon

Playa Limon is in El Seibo province, between Miches town and the village of El Cedro. The beach faces the Atlantic and is backed by the Laguna Limon mangrove reserve, a protected wetland of 11 square kilometers full of birds, including pink flamingos in winter. The dirt access road leaves the main Coastal Boulevard at the El Limon community.

What the beach is like

Coconut palms run almost to the water. The sand is golden and clean. The waves are bigger than at Playa Esmeralda because there is no reef protection, so swimming requires more care. There are no chairs, no umbrellas, no bars and no lifeguards. Pack water, snacks and reef-safe sunscreen. Cell coverage drops as you leave the village.

Things to do

The most popular activity is a horseback ride along the beach, organized by local guides at the El Limon community for 30 to 50 USD per person, usually 2 hours including the lagoon. The Laguna Limon mangrove boat tour leaves from the same village. Some 4x4 buggy tours from Punta Cana stop at Playa Limon before continuing east.

How to get there

From Punta Cana airport it is a 2 hour drive: take the Coastal Boulevard north and look for the El Limon turnoff after Miches town. From Bavaro it is 2 hours 15 minutes. Most travelers come on a tour from Punta Cana or Miches resorts, since the last 2 kilometers are unpaved and require 4x4.

Playa Limon vs Playa Esmeralda vs Round Mountain

Playa Esmeralda is the white-sand resort beach. Playa Limon is the wild palm beach. Round Mountain is the cliff viewpoint with the swings. A complete Miches day combines two of them. The Round Mountain plus Playa Esmeralda half-day is the easiest from Punta Cana. Playa Limon is better as a full-day with horseback and lagoon tour.

If your time is short, start with the Round Mountain plus Esmeralda Coast half-day from Punta Cana to see the most iconic views of the region, then return for a full-day at Playa Limon on a longer Dominican Republic trip.
