Esmeralda Coast (Costa Esmeralda) guide

The Esmeralda Coast is the 30 kilometer stretch of Atlantic coastline that runs from the town of Miches west toward Sabana de la Mar, in the northeast of the Dominican Republic. The name comes from the pale emerald color of the water, the result of fine white sand and a shallow protected bay.

For travelers it is the new alternative to Punta Cana and Bavaro: empty beaches, a single new resort area, the iconic Round Mountain viewpoint and small fishing villages still intact. This guide explains what the Esmeralda Coast is, what you can do there and how to plan a visit.

What is the Esmeralda Coast

Geographically the Esmeralda Coast covers the bay between Punta El Rey and Cabo Samana. The main beaches from east to west are Playa El Cedro, Playa Esmeralda, Playa Limon and Playa Nisibon. Inland from the coast rises a chain of green hills, including Montana Redonda, the 400 meter cliff that gives Round Mountain its name and its panoramic views.

The whole area was protected from mass tourism for decades because the road from Punta Cana was bad. The 2020 Coastal Boulevard opening changed everything, but the coast still feels remote compared to Bavaro.

Beaches of the Esmeralda Coast

Playa Esmeralda is the postcard beach, white sand, calm water, palm trees and almost no buildings. Playa Limon is wilder, a long virgin strip with no infrastructure, popular for horseback rides. Playa El Cedro near Miches town is the local beach with fishermen and food shacks. The water across all of them stays warm year round.

Things to do on the coast

Top half-day activities are Round Mountain with the cliff swings, Playa Esmeralda swim and lunch, Laguna Redonda kayak and birdwatching, a buggy or 4x4 ride along the beach and a sunset stop at one of the new beach bars in the Club Med area. Many tours from Punta Cana combine Round Mountain plus a beach stop into one half-day.

Resorts and where to stay

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda is the main resort, opened in 2019 on Playa Esmeralda. It is family friendly with four villages including an adults-only area. Casa Esmeralda Beach Club and a handful of villas serve the boutique segment. For everything else, base in Miches town and day-trip out.

How to visit

Most visitors are guests of Punta Cana or Bavaro resorts who come up for one day. The Round Mountain half-day tour is the standard option: 90 minute drive each way, 90 to 120 minutes at the mountain and viewpoints, often a quick beach stop. Cars and 4x4 rentals work too if you prefer to drive yourself.

If you only have one day on the Esmeralda Coast, the Round Mountain half-day tour from Punta Cana covers the swings, the viewpoints over the coast and the most famous photo spot of the bay.
