How to get to Miches
Miches sits 90 to 110 minutes north of Punta Cana airport via the 2020 Coastal Boulevard, the new highway that opened up the Esmeralda Coast to tourism. There are four practical ways to get there: rental car, private transfer, taxi or organized tour. This guide explains each option, the cost and the best fit by traveler type.
From Punta Cana airport (PUJ)
The fastest route from Punta Cana airport to Miches is the Coastal Boulevard (DR-104), 105 kilometers north, 90 to 110 minutes. Avoid the old inland road which adds 30 to 45 minutes. Rental cars from PUJ cost from 35 USD per day. Private transfers run 120 to 180 USD one way for up to 3 people. A taxi from the airport will quote 130 to 200 USD.
From Bavaro or Punta Cana resort zone
From Bavaro the drive is 2 hours, from Uvero Alto 60 to 75 minutes. Private transfers from a Bavaro resort cost 100 to 150 USD one way. Most resort tour desks sell Round Mountain half-day packages with free pickup that effectively cover the transfer.
From Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo to Miches is 3 hours by road via Hato Mayor and Sabana de la Mar. Cars rent from 30 USD per day in the capital. There is no public bus directly to Miches town. Most international travelers do not enter the country via Santo Domingo unless they are doing a multi region trip.
Organized tour vs DIY
If your goal is Round Mountain and the Esmeralda Coast for one day, the organized half-day tour from Punta Cana is the easiest option. It includes air conditioned transport, English speaking guide, swings stop, viewpoint and a Playa Esmeralda beach break, for 89 to 109 USD per person. DIY rental car makes sense if you stay 2+ nights in Miches and want flexibility for Playa Limon and the inland villages.
Driving tips and safety
The Coastal Boulevard is well paved and has clear signage. Speed limit is 80 km/h, with 60 km/h sections through villages. Driving is on the right. Avoid driving at night since lighting is poor and stray dogs and motorbikes can appear. Fuel is widely available between Higuey and Miches. The road is safe but defensive driving is needed.
If you do not want to rent a car for one day, book the Round Mountain half-day tour from Punta Cana. Pickup is included from any major Punta Cana, Bavaro or Uvero Alto resort and you skip all the logistics.
